TRFAM Qualifiers to be Held at 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel

The 6666 National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel, held June 15-26 in Oklahoma City, will host Non Pro and Rookie qualifying events for one of the most exciting events in reining. The Run For A Million, held at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, Nev., is slated for August 17-20. In addition to the million-dollar competition, there is a $100K Open Shoot Out, a $50K Invitational Freestyle, a $50K Non Pro Championship, as well as a Rookie Championship. The event, created by award-winning screenwriter/producer and NRHA member Taylor Sheridan, debuted in 2019.

Qualifiers are being offered across the United States and Canada and the NRHA Derby is slated to be one of them. “We at NRHA are truly excited to partner with Taylor Sheridan on this impactful event. This is part of a growth trend we are seeing in the sport, and it will continue to send ripples throughout our industry for years,” noted NRHA Commissioner Gary Carpenter.

The Rookie and Non Pro Qualifiers will run concurrently with the corresponding Ancillary classes (Non Pro and Rookie Level 2). Those wishing to qualify to compete at The Run For A Million must enter the concurrent class, fill out the TRFAM Qualifier form found on the NRHA Derby website, and pay the $200 fee per slate that they wish to enter.

The top five placings, plus ties, in each slate will be able to compete in Las Vegas at TRFAM. Qualification is based on the rider, not the horse, and each rider can only qualify once. Riders do not have to compete at TRFAM on the horse that was used to qualify but must own or lease the horse based on NRHA rules.

George Bell Joins Elite Rankings as an NRHA Million Dollar Owner

Recent successes of George Bell owned and raised equines have catapulted the charismatic North Carolinian to membership in an exclusive club of owners whose horses have won more than one million dollars in National Reining Horse Association competition.

For Bell, the achievement is a wonderful recognition and made even sweeter because the majority of money won was on horses he bred and raised. “This means a lot. It’s been a long time coming, and I’ve worked very, very hard for it. Probably way more than I wanted to work,” he said with a low laugh. “I’m also now a million-dollar breeder, and to me, that’s even more special because anyone can buy a horse, but not everyone can breed a good one.”

Bell has owned horses all his life and got into reining after watching the 1979 NRHA Futurity Co-Reserve Champion compete. “I had never seen a horse that good and wanted one like it, so I went and bought some that were bred similar to her,” he recalled. “That got me going better than what I was doing because, at the time, I really didn’t own a horse that could beat anyone doing anything. I was honest with myself, and looked at my herd and knew I couldn’t win with what I had.”

Cee Blair Masota, by Blair Cee out of Lady Masota Star, was a full sibling to 1985 World Champion and future NRHA Hall of Fame inductee Miss Cee Blair. “I ended up with both Cee Blair Masota and Miss Cee Blair when their owner, Roland Beeson, passed away. He had willed her to me because I took care of her most of her life, and I kept her until she was 37. What Roland Beeson did for me was huge,” Bell recalled.

Now the lineage of those mares can be found in most of the foals emerging from Bell’s breeding program. “I’ve never changed because it’s working. We had a Miss Cee Blair daughter, Cee Miss Hollywood (by Custom Crome), forever, and her babies have won around $500,000, and they’re still winning,” he explained. Cee Miss Hollywood’s winningest foal is the 2015 stallion Mr Royal Hollywood, by NRHA Three Million Dollar Sire Hollywoodstinseltown, with earnings exceeding $150,000.

“We’ve bred these horses so long that when we have a foal, it’s not a surprise what it is. We know going in what it was going to be and how it was going to work,” he said.

While Bell has had plenty of success with mares that have had lucrative show careers, he finds a lot of enjoyment when mares like Cee Miss Hollywood, who barely broke $2,000 in lifetime earnings, turn into great producers. “Good mares make you a hero. That’s the truth,” he said. “But I like to have a mare who hasn’t won a dime, and turn her into a good broodmare.”

Bell is also an avid showman with lifetime earnings in excess of $128,000, and can still be found competing. However, he’s always made sure that his son, NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider Brian Bell, has always ridden the cream of the crop. “I was always in the car business and had to work 80 to 90 hours a week, so I didn’t have that much time to ride when I was younger. I gave all my good horses to Brian to help him with his career, and I still do. That’s alright with me because I want to help him and always have, so that’s what I do,” he said. “It means a lot to me to watch him be successful, especially on our horses.”

Bell and his wife, Carol, live in Smithfield, North Carolina, and can be found competing and spectating at reining events across the country. “Carol loves the horses, reining, and riding. She’s really, really good with them, and enjoys the breeding and the babies,” he said. “I especially thank God, my family, especially my son Brian because he won the most money on them, my friends and the NRHA.”

Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Becomes NRHA Global Partner

In May, Clark’s Pump-N-Shop became the newest Global Partner for the National Reining Horse Association. As a Global Partner, Clark’s Pump-N-Shop will directly support the NRHA European Futurity and Derby, the NRHA European Affiliate Championships, in addition to the North American events.

The company, headquartered in Ashland, Kentucky, will also become the naming sponsor of the Open and Non Pro Novice Horse Derbies at this year’s 6666 Ranch NRHA Derby presented by Markel.

Clark’s Pump-N-Shop, which operates nearly 70 stores in Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, and Florida, was established in 1976 by John W. Clark. The convenience store chain is now co-owned by John’s sons, Rick Clark and Brent Clark.

Rick Clark is a familiar name to those in the reining horse industry. He is currently serving his second term as NRHA President and has been a member of the association for nearly three decades. He has been involved in all aspects of reining, as an owner, breeder, competitor, Board and Committee member for NRHA and the Reining Horse Foundation. He’s also served on the NRHA Sale Committee and as a leader in the Futurity Challenge.

“Rick has contributed to NRHA on a variety of levels and has for so many years. A lot of that commitment has been behind-the-scenes through the volunteering of his time, but this Global Partnership is a more visible representation of the support he’s given to reining over the years,” noted Gary Carpenter, NRHA Commissioner.

Clark said, “I’ve been around the sport for over 25 years now and I love it – it’s my passion. My brother Brent is my business partner and he’s come to some events – even bought a cowboy hat and we now partner on some horses. The more we looked at it, we knew becoming involved in a sponsorship capacity was a good idea.”

Clark has long sponsored individual events across the country, so it was a natural way to extend his support of the industry. He said, “NRHA is not just about the big events – it’s all over – and when there is a reining in Kentucky, Ohio or Florida, I have felt like it was good to be involved. Reiners reciprocate by doing business with Clark’s Pump-N-Shop and we appreciate their support! Our hope is to keep promoting our sport along with our convenience store chain. We’re still building stores.”

His goal of giving back to the sport and helping the shows made upgrading to a Global Partnership a natural progression. He continued, “I personally sponsored the European Futurity this year, and I thought as president of NRHA, it was the right thing to do. We are an international organization and if dollars go over there, I’m fine with it. Supporting reining worldwide is important.”

Carpenter added, “Clark’s Pump-N-Shop’s expansion around the globe it is a testament to how far-reaching our sport has become. The friendships made and the cultural exchanges through reining events strengthen the fabric of NRHA.”

Creating opportunities for reiners is a consistent theme for Clark, and the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Novice Horse Derby does just that. The $15,000 added Open Derby and a $10,000 added Non Pro division are for horses that have won less than $10,000 before May 15, 2022. Horses may also be entered into the Open or Non Pro Derby, but cross entry is not mandatory and there are no nomination requirements to enter only the Novice Horse Derby.

Clark said, “We are honored to be the title sponsor of this event. The novice derby provides a great opportunity and every time we can add an opportunity it’s an advantage to owners and exhibitors.”

$20,000 Freestyle Reining to be Featured at the 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel

A highlight for the 2022 6666 National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel will be the $20,000 Invitational Freestyle. Sponsored by the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau, the popular event will take place on Thursday, June 23, at 6 p.m.

NRHA Commissioner Gary Carpenter said, “The OKC CVB has been very loyal to NRHA. We are proud that our events have a substantial economic impact and grateful that Oklahoma City continues to invest in the NRHA Futurity and Derby.”

Freestyle reining has been popular at the NRHA Futurity in the past but was moved to the Derby in 2022 to give it a more prominent position. Often compared to figure skating routines, Freestyle Reining pairs the athleticism and finesse of reining moves choreographed to music, often with clever costuming and props.

NRHA Professional and Executive Committee member Shane Brown said, “By being held during the Derby, the Freestyle is returning to its roots. The freestyle event was created and began at the NRHA Derby in St. Paul, Minnesota. We are happy to have it as a crowd favorite in Oklahoma City to showcase our sport.”

Brown noted that the invitation-only lineup will feature some of the top freestyle performers from around the country. He said, “It should really be a showcase of entertaining performances.”

Confirmed Freestyle contestants include Shane Brown, Randy Dooley, Abby Bud, Tanya Jenkins, Jessicah Keller, Madison Rafacz, and Troy Heikes.

While the Freestyle Reining starts at 6 p.m., the excitement of Thursday night kicks off even earlier, beginning with the Hercules Reception at 4 p.m. in the Super Barn Warmup Arena. There, 2021 Derby Champion Jerseys Baby Driver, known as Hercules, will be available to meet fans and take pictures.

“We are excited that Janice Laney has chosen to bring her great stallion Hercules to the Derby for this reception. He is known for his great demeanor and love of kids, so this is a great opportunity for kids – both in reining and from the local area – to learn about horses and meet a great one,” noted NRHA Events Manager Cheryl Cody. “While this particular reception is geared towards the younger crowd, there will be plenty for adults to enjoy as well.”

Prior to the start of the Freestyle, the Derby Level 4 Non Pro Finalists will be introduced in the Coliseum Arena.
