Global Reining Sport Group, which produces the Tulsa Reining Classic, has once again made a landmark decision. Due to the large number of Horses entered in its Developing Horse Futurity  – the Futurity has been divided into two sections – each with equal added money and each with its own set of awards.

This was a decision that was made for the second year in a row- and again it came when the entries for the futurity closed and there were an astounding 115 horses entered! Colleen McQuay, President of Global Reining Sport Group noted, “Each section will have the same amount of added money – $10,000 – and awards as previously planned for the entire event. Each section will be awarded in its entirety and pinned as an individual event.” The Futurities will begin at 9 am on Wednesday morning. Section A will go first followed by Section B. Both section A and section B  award presentations will be made at the end of Section B.

Eduardo Salgado Wins $500 Novice Horse Open Level 1, Marco Ricotta Takes Level 2

Gainesville, Texas-based trainer Eduardo Salgado rode Lil Dreamer to a score of 144.5 to win the $500 Novice Horse Open Level 1.

The Brazilian native says his 5-year-old mare by Magnum Chic Dream and out of Myo Starlight by Paddys Irish Whiskey had a near perfect ride.

“I love her-she has a really good mind, all her maneuvers are good, plus she’s smart,” Salgado said. “She turns good and circles really good; she’s a big stopper. I loved the run.”

Salgado has ridden Lil Dreamer since the beginning of the mare’s career, despite a setback due to injury last year. The pair is now back in winning form for 2017.

“I started her as a 2-year-old, so I have ridden her for 3 years,” Salgado said. “When she was 4 I didn’t show her, because she had a problem with her hock. But I’ve shown her all this year, and she is really good. I show her every time, and she’s never anticipated. She’s a really good mare.”

Jody Brainard rode Hokiss Pokiss to the reserve position for owner John Vance, scoring a 144. The 2013 gelding is by Whizs Chic A Dee and out of Shades of Amos by Primary Pine.

In the $500 Novice Horse Open Level 2, Marco Ricotta piloted See U Saturday Night to a 145.5 to win the class. The 2012 stallion owned by Story Book Stables is by Star Spangled Whiz and out of Wimpys Rose by Wimpys Little Step. Salgado and Lil Dreamer’s 144.5 took reserve in the class.

Rookie Reiners Take the Stage in Mustang Arena

Rookie reiners had their chance to shine Tuesday evening, August 29, in the Mustang Arena at the Tulsa Reining Classic.

Tolbert “Buster” Foster marked a 142.5 aboard Wimpys Memorabilia to win the $100 Rookie Level 2 and the JP Prime Time Rookie classes.

“We hope for bigger and better things. I’ll be out of rookie this year, but I’m hoping she can get me that elusive 72 score which I’ve never gotten,” Foster said. “Our 142.5 today is up there with the best we’ve done, but I feel sure she’s got enough to take me to another level.”

Wimpys Memorabilia is a 2009 mare by Wimpys Little Step and out of the famed Memorable Affair by Major Vaquero.

“Her mother Memorable Affair is a pretty famous mare in the reining business who won over $100,000-a bit of a star,” Foster said. “[Wimpys Memorabilia] had a good non-pro career with Dr. Jim Morgan, and the last time he showed her was the NRBC as a 4-year-old. We had lameness problems later that year… she had three babies and hadn’t been in the show ring for four years until this year, and she’s just been super every time.”

Foster says his mare is the perfect confidence booster, even after her long hiatus from the arena.

“Her biggest thing is her stop. She’s a big mare, so in the spins, she doesn’t have a lot of speed but she has a lot of style,” Foster said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence showing her; you don’t have to worry about anything.”

Foster owns a breeding business and has worked closely with the McCutcheons to build his breeding operation into a quality herd.

“I am a breeder, I moved up to Collinsville, Texas, to be closer to Tom and Mandy McCutcheon,” Foster said. “I raise these Quarter Horses, and Tom and Mandy helped me get several really nice horses, so I look forward to breeding some nice babies-it’s really exciting.”

Kelly Shepherd took reserve honors in the class with a 141.5 aboard Margarita.

In the Rookie Level 1, Krista Marshall and Cromed By Rooster scored a 140 to take the victory.

Marshall purchased the 6-year-old gelding by Cromed Out Mercedes and out of Peekaski Cielo by Gallo Del Cielo last June in Gainesville, Texas. She says “Cromey’s” biggest asset is his big stops and honest ability.

“We had a little trouble in our turns but we pulled through it, and our rundowns were nice, stops were deep, and he was a good boy today,” Marshall said. “He’s like a big dumb hunk! He doesn’t want you to be in his face, he wants you to trust him, and today he proved why you should be able to trust him.”

2017 is Marshall’s first full year in an affiliate circuit and her first time to show in Tulsa. By day, the Minot, North Dakota, resident and her family own a truck stop. Riding and showing reining horses are her escapes from the day-to-day work.

“This is the farthest we’ve traveled this year, and we’re happy to be here,” Marshall said. “We run a 24-hour business, and I show horses to get away from the hustle and bustle of work. It’s a great outlet and keeps me focused, and it’s a lot better than going to the lake.”

In a two-way tie for second, Jon Gilbertson and Koolwhiz N Wranglers tied with Walter Saunders and Shur Sheez Juice, both notching a 138.5.

Sam Schaffhauser Wins AQHA All Age Reining

Riding Lil Rene Gun, Sam Schaffhauser of Eads, Tennessee, took first in the American Quarter Horse Association All Age Reining Class. The 2012 mare is by Colonels Smokingun and out of Sail Away Rene by Cee Blair Sailor and is owned by James Fanello of Lucas, Ohio. Sarah Cunningham came in second place aboard Gotta Get A Diamond, a 2013 mare by Spooks Gotta Whiz and out of Brilliant Diamantes by Shining Spark, owned by Cross C Ranch of Maysville, Oklahoma.

The American Quarter Horse Association, Amarillo – Morris Kulmer of Bountiful, Utah, captured the world championship title and reserve world championship title in reining at the 2017 AQHA Select World Championship Show, presented by Adequan® (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan), on August 28 in Amarillo.

Kulmer won the world championship title with his American Quarter Horse Chics Dream. The palomino gelding, sired by Magnum Chic Dream and out of First Ex Flame, was bred by Nancy Wilkerson-Ditty of Ocala, Florida.

In the reining class, 52 entries competed for world champion honors and a purse of $7,280. World champions received a prize package that included a custom-designed gold trophy; Montana Silversmiths sterling-silver belt buckle with 14-karat-gold overlay; specially designed logoed jacket, courtesy of Cripple Creek Outerwear; neck wreath; a ribbon; and 100 pounds of Nutrena feed.

Kulmer and Chics Dream, also took home the Super-Select first-place in reining. AQHA recognizes the top three Super-Select competitors in every class at the Adequan® Select World. Super-Select is recognition for exhibitors age 70 and over. Exhibitors winning the Super-Select division receive a plaque, and the achievement will appear on the official records of the horse and exhibitor.

Kulmer won the reserve world championship title with his American Quarter horse Dreamy Little Sailor. The sorrel gelding, sired by Magnum Chic Dream and out of Ejoy A Lena, was bred by Gay and Phillip Verrett of Conroe, Texas.

Reserve world champions received a prize package that included a custom-designed silver trophy; Montana Silversmiths buckle, courtesy of The American Quarter Horse Journal; a specially designed logoed jacket, courtesy of Cripple Creek Outerwear; and a ribbon.

The Adequan® Select World is the pinnacle event for American Quarter Horse exhibitors ages 50 and over from around the world, who must qualify for the event by earning a predetermined number of points to compete in each of the classes representing halter, English and western disciplines. More than 1,090 entries from the United States, Canada, Costa Rica and Belgium are competing for 44 world championships at this year’s event, August 25 – September 2 at the Tri-State Fairgrounds in Amarillo.

The Austrian Futurity Championship Non Pro in Level 4 was claimed by Italian Ewald Rifeser aboard Petra Burger’s Xtra Dun Wimpy (Wimpys Little Step x SLJ Dun Juice) who scored a 212. The palomino mare was bred by Smart Like Juice Inc. and started by Mathieu Buton Reining Horses. Ewald Rifeser rode this horse to the Reserve Champion title at the  Summer Slide in Italy in 3-year-old Snaffle Bit Reining and had been third with her ion the go round.

Jennifer Nixdorf and her mare Spooks Babe N Chic (Spooks Gotta Gun x Babe And Chic) became Reserve Champion scoring a 211.5. The two had been leading after the go round in L4 and L3. Spooks Babe N Chic was bred by Karin and Ruggero Prevedel. 23-year-old  Jennifer, who trains with Rudi Kronsteiner, was 2016 French Futurity Champion Non Pro and AustrianRHA Futurity Non Pro Reserve Champion. This show is Jennifer‘ s event anyway as her great stallion AB Peppy Diamond was Open Champion last night scoring a 230!

Denise Laengle and Whiz The Way (Walla Walla Whiz x Tuffy Solana) placed third. The horse was bred by Doris Hoefacher. The two had been leading after the go round in L1. 

What a great success: 19-year-old Elena Kölbl from Austria and her Gunners Lee Hook (Dr. Lee Hook x Joaquinspineoak) had become Austrian Futurity Champion Non Pro L1, 3-year-old horses the day before, and now they won the Futurity L3 Non Pro as well scoring a 214.5. Obviously Gunners Lee Hook is like his great sire: you can simply rely on him. Elenas has been highly successful in Youth classes through the years and earned team bronze for Austria at the FEI European Championship Young Riders 2014.

Jennifer Nixdorf and her mare Spooks Babe N Chic became Reserve Champion with Renata Rudolecka and her Paint Horse mare HH Be A Legend (Gunnersaurus Rex x Bit of a Diva) following on third place (207.5). The horse was bred by Miroslav Dolezal.

With a great 222.5, Sarah Ehrenreich and her Diabolika Gunmachine (Colonel Smoking Gun x Chic Luv Chocolate) claimed the Futurity Championship Non Pro L4 and L3 of the 4-year-old horses. The two had been second in the L4 go round and leading the L3 together with Franziska Wallner aboard Heidi Wallner’s Mai Tai Enterprise. Diabolika Gun Machine  and Sarah were Ltd. Non Pro Reserve Champion at the European Futurity and Res. Champion Breeders Futurity

The Reserve Championship  L4 was claimed by the best of the go round Chiara Bartoletti aboard her Holly Jolly Jaba (Jaba Oak x Smart Dolly Hickory), who scored a 221.5. With this mare, the young University student was 2016 IRHA Futurity Non Pro Level 4, 3 and 2. Chiara, who trains with Adriano Meacci, was 2007 Futurity Champion, 2008 NRHA of Germany Breeders Futurity Non Pro Champion, 2009 NRHA European Futurity Non Pro Level 3 and 4 Reserve Champion, FEI European Reining Championship Young Rider Team Silver Medal and Individual Gold Medal, 2010 NRHA European Futurity Non Pro Level 3 Reserve Champion, 2011 FEI European Reining Championship Young Rider Team Gold Medal as well as 2016 IRHA/NRHA Derby Non Pro Champion Levels 4, 3 and 2.

Two riders tied for third place honours in L4: Austrian Andreas Lukner aboard Onceuponastar (Spark N Whiz x Starmax RM) and Jürgen Pritz aboard Rose of Mercedes (Cromed Out Mercedes x Smooth Star Freckles)– both scoring a 218.

Reserve Futurity Champion L3 was Wolfgang Hammer aboard Mr Ricochet (Ricochet Rooster x Docs Oak Rosy), who scored a 220.Simone Eitzinger aboard Hannes Kirchberger’s Rowdys Smart Diamond (Hollywood Yankee Kid x GH Redskin Lady) placed third scoring a 219.

What an Austrian Futurity Open final of the 4-year-old horses: Dominik Reminder who had been leading after the L4 go round scored a 228 aboard Clemens Hefel’s Selectively Whiz (Amendago Whiz x Selectively Done). This looked like the Futurity Championship for a long time, but in the end the Austrian Futurity Champion L4 of the 4-year-old horses was Massimiliano Ruggeri aboard Maurizio Ferrarol’s Wimpy Margarita (Wimpys Little Step x Custom Margarita) who scored a 228. Massimiliano Ruggeri was an NRHA European Futurity Finalist with this stallion.

Dominik Reminder and Selectively Whiz became Resyesrve Champion. The horse was bred by Jan Dirk Bodenstab and placed nith at the NRHA Breeders Futurity 2016. Dominik Reminder, who trains in Italy, earned individual and team silver for Germany at the 2017 European Championships. Reminder is a multiple Bronze Trophy Open Champion and earned team silver at the 2016 World Championship. He was  NRHA Open World Reserve Champion 2013 and won the AMERICANA Bronze Trophy Open.

Two riders tied for the Reserve Futurity Championship: Markus Gebert aboard  Whiz A Lot (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Lotti vom Letter Berg) and Davide Brighenti aboard Francesco Bonadeo’s Spooks Gotta Crome (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Chics Love Crome). Both scored a 226.5.

This was also the  Futurity Championship L3 for Brighenti and Spooks Gotta Crome . Reserve Futurity Champion L3 was Klaus Lechner aboard Astrid Eisendle‘s Trashy (Gunnatrashy x ARC Martha Surprise).

Spooks Gotta Crome was bred by Carlo Orsi.  Brighenti, who eaned team gold at the FEI European Championship 2008, was AustrianRHA Futurity Finalist 2016.

Emanuel Ernst and Rooster in Command (Reds Rooster Demaso x Freckled Piroska) placed third scoring a 222.5. The horse is owned by H.P. Reiss. Multiple DQHA Futurity and NRHA Breeders Futurity Champion Emanuel Ernst already placed third at the  Austrian Futurity Open L3 3-year-old horses.

What an unbelievable 3-year-old Futurity Open final  L4 and 3! The go rounds had already predicted a great final, and it got even better!! For a long time it looked like no one could beat  NRHA Million Dollar Rider Rudi Kronsteiner and Brigitte Steiner’s Spook N Ruffles (Smart Spook x Ruffle Me Up). The multiple Austrian Futurity Champion and multiple NRHA World Champion had scored a great 223 with the mare bred by Greg Hill after leading the L4 go round with a  222.5. But then the second of the go round, Lukas Brucek aboard Magico Gallo (Rize Rooster x Snappy My Magic) did even better then. The two scored a  224 becoming  Austrian Futurity Champion Open L4.

Thne 3-year-old stallion Magico Gallo is owned by his breeder Andrea Parolari. It was another big success for the 33-year-oild professionael Lukas Brucek, who started his career as a Co-Trainer of Rudi Kronsteiner and Morey Fisk. Today, he operates his own training facility Lukas Brucek Performance horses at the Prosper Horse Ranch in the Czech Republic and has got NRHA LTE of over $ 108,000. He is a multiple Futurity and Derby Finalist as well as multiple Bronze Trophy Champion.   Also he was 2010 European Futurity Reserve Champion Level 1 and 2 and 2011 Reserve Champion Open Level 3, Belgium Futurity Champion and French Derby Champion Open..

Rudi Kronsteiner and Spook N Ruffles became Reserve Champion.FEI World Champion  Gennaro Lendi placed third aboard Luigi Parise‘s Maytheforcebewhizyou (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Jacs Golden Faith) scoring a 222.5. The horse was bred by Claudia Hahn.

What a great an well earned success for the long and solid work of Austrian professional Valentina Sagmeister: Aboard Sylvia Schützenhofer’s The Spacegun (Gunner x Sterling Peppy San) she scored a 220 in the L3 final winning the Non Pro Futurity, The stallion bred by Ramona Levai had been third after the go round.

Wther 2nd and 3rd place in Int. Open at this Futurity, European Affiliate Reserve Champion Int. Open 2017 or Limited Open beim NRHA Breeders Derby in Kreuth – Valentina Sagmeister is one of the most consistent and successful professionals  of Austria and well known for her Non Pros as well.

Giovanni Masi de Vargas placed second aboard Katharina Dejori‘s Unique Remediz (Lotta Doc x Mollie Kettie) scoring a 219. The stallion was bred by  Garry Biggs. Giovanni Masi, who started his riding career as a multiple FEQHA Eureopan Champion in various disciplines, is one of Italy’s shooting stars in Reining. He was 2015 FEI European Champion and 2014  Austrian Futurity Champion Ltd. Open.

One of Germany’s most successful professionals placed third with only half a point apart: Emanuel Ernst aboard Smaq Lil Gun (Gunner x Spooks Pearl) owned by Derk Wuyster. The mare was bred by SARL La Maqueline. Emanuel Ernst is well known for training young horses for the Futurity which he proved by being a multiple DQHA Futurity Champion and NRHA Breeders Futurity Champion. But he also knows how to show aged horses successfully like the 11-year-old stallion Sailin Playboy with whom he was Equitana Cup Champion and Int. German Champion.
