Franco Bertolani and Dun It For Whizkey Lead Open Prelims at NRHA Derby presented by Markel Insurance

The National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel Insurance has reached the half-way point. On Wednesday, June 19, the first section of the Open Derby preliminaries was held in the Jim Norick Coliseum.

Leading the field of 200 with an incredible score of 229 is NRHA Million Dollar Rider Franco Bertolani and Dun It For Whizkey, owned by Cardinal Hill Training Center.

Dun It For Whizkey, by Topsail Whiz out of Dun It For Chex, is a six-year-old stallion that is a former NRHA Futurity Co-Reserve Champion. The flashy grey stallion has been a finalist at every major event.

Currently leading the Open Level 3 is Trevor Dare and Xtra Dun Step with a 226.5. Xtra Dun Step, by Wimpys Little Step and out of All Thats Dun, is owned by Silver Spurs Equine.

Holding onto the high score of the Level 2 is Cade McCutcheon and Shes Got Good Guns, owned by Roxanne Koepsell. McCutcheon and Shes Got Good Guns, by Colonels Smoking Gun and out of A Bueno Poco Dunit, scored a 225.5.

Topping the Level 1 is Josh Tishman and Baileys Sidekick with a 221.5. Baileys Sidekick, owned by Kathy Thompson, is by Gunners Special Nite and out of A Shining Sidekick.

The Bob’s Custom Saddle Novice Horse Open Championship will be decided at the conclusion of the preliminary round, and there is currently a tie for the lead.

Both Lorinaldo Gomes and Tom McCutcheon rode their horses to scores of 222. Gomes was riding Snip O One, owned by Sarah Nimigan, while McCutcheon was showing Dun With Guns, owned by Turnabout Farm Inc. Snip O One is by A Sparkling Vintage and out of Snip O Gun, and Dun With Guns is by Gunners Special Nite and out of Belle Starr Dun It.

The top 30 from the Open Levels 4 -1 will compete on Saturday in the clean-slate finals. Draw positions will be determined at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Platinum Performance Open Draw Party.
